He asked for the "unedited version". So I sent it.
For context: I do freelance content work, and I had this one client I'd been working with for about eight months. Nice enough guy in the beginning, but somewhere around month three he started getting weirdly convinced that I was "over-editing" his stuff and removing his voice. His words. I tried explaining a few times that what I was actually doing was fixing subject-verb agreement and removing sentences that said the same thing twice, but he wasn't really interested in that framing.
So things kind of settled into this pattern where he'd push back on small changes and I'd explain why I made them, and we'd go back and forth for a bit and eventually move on. Fine. Annoying, but fine.

Then a few weeks ago he sends me this long message about how he wants to "take back creative control" and that going forward he wants to see his original drafts published, not my versions. I told him directly, in writing, that I really didn't recommend this.
I said something like "I'm happy to do that, but I want to flag that there are some consistent issues in the drafts that we should probably address first before going that route." He said he appreciated the note but he knew what he was doing and to please just forward the originals from now on.
Okay. Sure.

What started as a manageable back-and-forth had now turned into a turning point. Despite clear warnings, the client was set on seeing things his way, leaving the editor with little choice but to step back and let the work speak for itself.

I went back through eight months of saved drafts and started sending them over. The first one went out and within about four hours he was back in my inbox asking why there were two paragraphs that said essentially the same thing. I told him that was in the original and I had removed the repetition in my version. He said "oh" and didn't reply after that.
Second piece goes out a few days later. This one had a sentence in it that was genuinely just grammatically broken, like missing-a-verb broken. He caught it himself before it went live and asked me to fix it. I fixed it and sent it back. Did not say anything else.

By the third piece he asked if I could "maybe just do a light pass" before sending. I said of course, no problem at all. My rate for a light pass is the same as my rate for a full edit since the time is roughly the same, I just explained that upfront so there were no surprises. He agreed.
We are now back to exactly the arrangement we had before, except now he thinks it was his idea.

In the end, the situation resolved itself in the most natural way possible. By stepping back and letting the client experience the difference firsthand, the editor made their point without saying much at all. Sometimes the best lesson is the one people arrive at on their own, even if it takes a few messy drafts.
